An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the dynamic and collegial education team in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing (Teaching & Scholarship). In this role you will lead, grow, and promote excellence in our nursing education portfolio, aligned to Departmental vision and strategy. We are seeking a professionally qualified nurse with a collaborative ethos and significant experience of the development and delivery of high-quality health professional education.

The successful candidate will assume the role of Subject Lead for Nursing; a rotational leadership position undertaken on a fixed term basis (3 years, in the first instance). A key member of the Department’s teaching leadership team, the Subject Lead provides strategic leadership and operational management of our nursing programmes (Nursing Associate, BSc (Hons) Nursing, MNurs, MSc Nursing) continuously improving the student experience and bringing innovation to our teaching and learning activities.

Role

  • To lecture, lead seminars, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • To take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting innovative teaching and learning approaches and material, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
  • To lead the design, development and delivery of a range of academic programmes of study and ensure that programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the Department and University.
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed include:

  • Postgraduate degree in nursing or related, relevant discipline and ideally PhD.
  • Current registration as a Nurse with the NMC (any field of practice) and a postgraduate teaching qualification.
  • Proven ability to plan and shape the direction of nursing education, ensuring plans complement broader educational strategy.
  • Extensive subject area knowledge, founded on substantive professional experience.
  • Well-established national and international reputation in subject area.
  • Extensive track record of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, using effective techniques to design, deliver and assess engaged education, including at course level.
  • Proven ability to plan, manage, organise and assess own teaching contributions, demonstrating leadership, innovation and quality.
  • Ability to mentor, manage, motivate and coordinate teaching teams, delegating effectively. Ability to resolve performance issues and formulate staff development plans (as needed) to meet team aims.
  • Ability to undertake significant departmental administrative and management responsibilities, including monitoring and managing resources and budgets.
  • Proven ability to plan and shape the direction of nursing education, ensuring plans complement broader educational strategy.
  • Leadership skills to contribute to departmental teaching policy development.
  • Highly developed personal attributes commensurate with this senior role.
