We are seeking to appoint a new External Examiner for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice Degree Apprenticeship. We are seeking an academic candidate who is experienced and currently involved in the teaching and assessing of advanced clinical practice students. Applicants would need to have insight into current healthcare practice and be registered with the NMC/HCPC/GPhC.
We are looking for the appointment to commence in January 2025 and the tenure of appointments is usually for a period of four years. All appointments are subject to the candidate meeting the University’s criteria for appointment.
Previous experience as an external examiner and degree apprenticeships/end point assessments is preferred. However, if you have not been an external examiner before, a mentor would be appointed for you to develop within the role.
Please note we cannot accept applications if you have previously been an External Examiner within the last 5 years for the university, or if a member of our staff acts as an External Examiner within the same department at your institution.
Suitable candidates will:
- Be employed in Higher Education
- Have experience in delivering advanced clinical practice education
- Have experience in the participation or delivery of apprenticeship level programme.
- Have experience in designing, delivering, and assessing Level 7 provision.
- Have previous External Examiner experience.
- Be resident and have the right to work in the UK.
Duties will include:
- Comment on the content of the subject area particularly with regard to subject benchmarks
- Examine assessment briefs and exam papers to ensure appropriateness in meeting the respective requirements required of students and moderation of said work. Ensuring academic standards and the achievements of students are comparable with those in other UK higher education establishments, of which the external examiner has experience
- Provide informative comment and recommendations on whether the assessment process measures student achievement rigorously and fairly against the intended outcomes of the course/s and is conducted in line with the relevant policies and regulations
- You will attend the relevant examination board to agree final awards and give feedback, also the submission of an annual report and review is required. Examination boards are held online using Microsoft Teams.
- Engage in communication with the academic and course team
- Liaising with other external examiners at DMU.
- Liaising with the external verifier of the apprenticeship standard as required.
The external examiner will review modules on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and Advanced Clinical Practice Degree Apprenticeship.

- Diagnostic reasoning for advanced clinical practice
- Advanced Practice through Leadership
- Critical evaluation of research for advancing practice
- Applied prescribing for advanced clinical practice & pharmacology for prescribing in advanced clinical practice
- Advanced practice service improvement project
- Advanced clinical practice End Point Assessment
