The University of Staffordshire is seeking to appoint two External Examiners for our award-winning post-registration portfolio to ensure appropriate quality standards are achieved within its provision of:
- MSc Advanced Clinical Practice
- MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Mental Health)
- Various standalone modules L6 and L7 within the continuing professional development portfolio.
General information
- Applications are invited from suitably qualified healthcare lecturers, with experience in teaching and examining at a UK higher education institution and working knowledge of quality assurance processes.
- The post requires applicants to have insight into current healthcare practice and for the ACP position, to have subject specific knowledge of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner role.
- All appointments are subject to the candidate meeting the University’s criteria for appointment.
- Tenure will normally be for a period of four years.
- Allocation of modules per position is outlined below, however, will be reviewed as appropriate.
- Two positions are available; please note that position 1 includes responsibilities of both Module External Examiner and Award External Examiner (requiring the completion of an annual report and additional remuneration upon receipt).
- Assessment boards are held 3 times per year, currently using Microsoft Teams meetings.
Position 1: MSc Advanced Clinical Practice – Award External Examiner and Module External Examiner for our award-winning ACP programme.
The post holder will undertake the role of Award and Module External Examiner and review modules in the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice. These modules can also be studied in a standalone capacity. The successful candidate will have relevant knowledge in relation to the educational preparation of future Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
Indication of modules you would be responsible for:
- Advanced Health Assessment
- Advanced Health Assessment (Mental Health)
- Advanced Mental Health Practice
- Clinical Reasoning and Decision Making
In addition to the above, a standalone module:
- Principles of Physical Assessment
Position 2: L6 and L7 modules in the CPD portfolio – studied either within the ACP programme or on a standalone basis.
The external examiner will review various modules in the CPD portfolio.
Indication of modules you would be responsible for:
- Research Methodology and Methods
- Project-Based Change
- Master’s dissertation
- Leadership role in Quality, Innovation and Change
- Applied Anaesthetic Care module
As an External Examiner you will be expected to:
- Have current registration with the NMC, HCPC or GPhC.
- Be employed in Higher Education.
- Scrutinize samples of examination/essay scripts and other assessed materials, advising module assessment boards on the content and standard of assessments.
- Attend a minimum of 2 assessment boards a year.
- Review new modules in preparation for validation events.
Support for the role:
- Previous experience as an external examiner is preferred. However, if you do not have previous external examiner experience, a mentor will be allocated to you.
