The University of Hertfordshire’s (UH) School of Health & Social Work (HSK) is seeking to appoint a Head of Department of Nursing, Health & Wellbeing.

As currently one of the largest academic Schools in UH, HSK is a successful and ambitious school, offering a wide portfolio of Health and Social Care education and research. We are committed to recognising and addressing gender and racial inequalities across academia for all students and staff. The School was awarded Athena SWAN Silver status in 2018 and are actively contributing to the University’s submission for an Institutional Race Equality Charter Award. HSK won the Teaching Innovation of the Year, at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2020, recognised for the creative approach in educating our adult nursing students and nursing associates in the provision of transcultural and compassionate end-of-life care. The School was also shortlisted in the Nursing Associate Training Programme Provider of the Year category.

Main duties and responsibilities
The role of Head of Department, as an academic manager, is one of strategic and operational leadership, ensuring the highest quality of learning, teaching, research, enterprise and scholarship in the subject(s) or discipline(s) for which the Department is responsible. The successful applicant will apply a solution focused approach, within a resource environment offering considerable opportunities to innovate. The Department’s comprehensive portfolio includes pre and post qualifying programmes, undergraduate, postgraduate, degree apprenticeships, continuing professional development and short courses. The role requires a significant level of autonomy, alongside consideration of the Department’s business in the context of the wider School, with close collaboration with the Dean of School, members of the Senior Executive Group, managers in the School and wider University, together with senior managers and practitioners within our numerous external partner organisations.

Skills & experience
Applicants must be educated minimally to master’s degree level, preferably holding a doctorate or working towards. Proven strategic management experience at an appropriate level, is essential, as are excellent communication, interpersonal, organisational and planning skills. In addition, applicants must demonstrate proven experience of building effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders both within and external to their current organisation. Applicants will be able to outline their experience of strategic leadership, financial planning, the monitoring of budgets, managing people and teams and the development and enhancement of business delivery, in the context of higher education and research. The role requires evident experience of working to equality, wellbeing, and inclusivity objectives. A commitment to continuous professional development is essential, as is the overt commitment to the values and equality objectives of the University & School.
