The Faculty of Health Education and Life Sciences in Birmingham City University is seeking exceptional candidates to lead through a period of unprecedented growth and development. Birmingham City University is investing £41 Million in a purpose built development. The 10,500m² building at City South Campus in Edgbaston will enable the University to offer a wide range of new health, life science and sports courses. To facilitate these developments we are seeking to appoint a Head of Department for the Department of Life Sciences.
We are seeking experienced academics with a track record of innovation and leadership, who will develop and enable a wide range of curricula within their Department and contribute to the School Faculty and University’s strategic priorities. The appointed Head of Department will have highly developed leadership and management skills. They will infuse their area of the School’s portfolio with new thinking and lead the debate about the intellectual direction of the new curricula, identifying ways in which it can meet external needs and markets and to actively seek opportunities to develop and share modules and staff beyond the boundaries of the Department. They would also be responsible for advising the Executive Dean and Head of School on recruitment, staffing, resourcing and training requirements.
The Head of Department will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of the student experience and for the Department’s programmes achieving recruitment targets and operating within budgets and financial regulations. Those appointed would have a broad record of achievement in one of the curriculum areas in their respective department and a record of research and/or enterprise activity, or evidence of advanced engagement with learning and teaching initiatives.
A Readership or Professorship in an area of research appropriate to the role may be available to a suitably qualified and experienced candidate.
