Innovation
Workshop/study day for healthcare support workers around basic clinical observations. The study day is aimed at those working in the mental health setting, but addresses the physical health agenda.
What prompted innovation?
- Current gaps in service provision.
- Department of Health policy.
- Expressed need by a local Trust.
What makes innovation different?
As well as explaining relevant anatomy and physiology, the workshop allows time to practice clinical observations under supervision within a safe environment. Part of the afternoon session attempts to put into action earlier learning by taking, recording and acting upon observations taken on a human patient simulator. These observations can be abnormal and the healthcare support worker is expected to interact with the “patient,” their family and relevant healthcare professionals appropriately.
Changes in practice
Attendees have stated that this method of learning and teaching highlights the importance of accurately taking and recording clinical observations, clearly outlines what abnormal findings are and what action should be taken. This can only have a positive impact on patient outcomes.
Impact
- Student evaluation forms from three individual study days, as well as pre and post test results for these sessions.
- Return on investment analysis is currently underway.
Dissemination
- Initial results have been fed back to the Trust.
- Evaluations will be presented at the Yorkshire & Humber Clinical Skills Network conference in September 2013.
