Virtual learning environment promoting PBL and clinical decision making

Innovation

  • It is acknowledged that many practitioners display anxiety and lack confidence which may affect competence in dealing with acutely ill patients.
  • Early Recognition using the ABCDE approach has been developed in an attempt to promote better understanding of warning signs and interventions in patients who are at risk of deterioration from impending or established critical illness.
  • This programme is delivered via an online Immersive Virtual Learning Environment comprising online tutorials, additional reading, end tests and simulated clinical scenarios.
  • Development involved the staff named above working closely with partners from industry whilst ensuring the end product was aligned with NMC requirements.

What prompted innovation?

  • The aforementioned issues with anxiety and lack of confidence in care of acutely ill adults are prime drivers for this development.
  • Students may not gain the same experiences in acute care.
  • Students may be dispersed across a large geographical area highlighting the need for high quality e-learning resources to be available in order to enhance a blended approach to delivery.
  • The prospect of revalidation for trained staff against a background of budgetary pressures, staffing levels and release of staff for training.

What makes innovation different?

Though there are many courses promoting systematic assessment of acutely ill patients it is believed our approach promotes flexibility in access to high quality resources and a chance to ‘practice’ in a safe environment.

Changes in practice

The resource is undergoing final testing and alignment with University of Stirling IT platforms so we cannot identify changes in practice at this time.

Impact

Evaluation is planned.

Dissemination

  • There have been regular progress updates and information sessions for colleagues will be provided before release.
  • Business partners in the e-learning consortium have been engaged in promotion with NHS Trusts and HEIs at home and abroad.
