Teaching and assessing knowledge on haemoglobinopathies using ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’

I have adapted a resource developed by Antenatal Screening Wales for midwifery teaching/training and assessment of knowledge on haemoglobinopathies. It is based on the ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ game/programme.

What prompted innovation?

  • Lack of knowledge/interest on the topic/relevance of haemoglobinapthies in a low prevalence country like Wales.
  • Poor retention of previously taught content (anecdotally and small study conducted to prove this).
  • To introduce an extremely fun element to the end of a 3 hour taught session on sickle cell and thalassaemia.

What makes innovation different?

Fun element alongside the familiarity of the rules of the game; i.e. Life lines

Changes in practice

Improved heamoglobinopathy awareness and interest; (as often little is known about these infrequently seen conditions).

Impact

  • Frequent applause is received at the end of my sessions.
  • Observing students to be excited/having fun during class (self evaluation).
  • Very positive student and midwifery tutor feedback.

Dissemination

  • Antenatal Screening Wales has also utilised this resource.
  • I am also thinking of utilising this resource with SCPHN groups later this year (to coincide with the recent roll out of neonatal screening in Wales sine June 2013).
