Simulated practice for pre-registration children’s nursing

Profession:

When did you first introduce the innovation?

More than 24 months ago

Please describe the innovation you have developed

Developed/led the introduction of 5 weeks of simulated practice into the pre-registration programme for children’s nursing,

Developed low fidelity scenarios for student nurses that are used in simulated practice. Created a structure for simulated practice that myself and colleagues now use when facilitating simulated practice.

What prompted you to develop this innovation?

The reduction of actual placements with the NHS and the increase of student nurses being recruited led to the need for simulated practice. The Nursing and Midwifery Council allows for 300 hours of the 2300 hours practice required for registration to be simulated.

In your view, what is it about this innovation that makes it different/important?

It allows students to learn and develop their clinical skills in a safe nuturing environment. It allows mistakes to happen and patient care to not be affected. It allows care to be carried out at a slower pace than it would be in a real clinical environment and this faciltates learning. The debrief at the end of simulation is reflective.

Few HEI’s have introiuced simulated practice into their pre registration programmes.

The majority of simulation is done for training qualified health professionals and is high fidelity. This simulation has a different focus, in that it is for student nurses and focuses on the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Esssential Skills Cluster and is low fidelity.

To what extent does your innovation make use of existing approaches, resources or technologies?

Existing approaches for simulation were followed, for example group sizes, number of faciltators, debrief.

Equipment used for teaching clinical skills was used although new equipment was also bought.

To what degree has this innovation led to changes in education or clinical practice?

It has developed student confidence in their clinical practice.

It has changed the structure of our pre-regsitration programme and increased the lecturers clinical hours through simulation.

What evidence do you have of the impact of the innovation?

Student evaluation.

To what degree has the innovation been disseminated in your organisation or elsewhere?

Presented in June 2013 at HSPN UK conference on simulation at University of Bedfordshire.

Presented in July 2014 at HSPN International conference on simulation in San Francisco USA.

Joined South East Simulation Network May 2015 and presented to them September 2015.

Please provide details of any plans you have to disseminate the innovation in the future.

Plan to write an article for publication about the simulation.
