New and exciting theory and practice modules were developed and delivered to encourage students within their third year to explore different aspects of health care practices and learn more about different cultures through an international learning experience.

What prompted innovation?

The need to help students understand different cultures and health care systems and the role of health care workers within other countries. Students are able to develop knowledge and skills about the culture and diversity of the people and the country e.g. students have undertaken the International module and have been able to secure a practice experience in North Carolina this allowed them to make the comparisons.

What makes innovation different?

It encourages students to think about evidence based practice and research from a local, national and international perspective.

Changes in practice

From student evaluations this has been revolutionary in their approach to health care in the UK and their knowledge and understanding.

Dissemination

  • Recently I had a paper accepted for the “Strengthening the programme focus; strengthening the student experience”.
  • I had a poster presentation to showcase as good practice within the school. “Developing and delivering an international experience”
  • It was also submitted as a case study to the LTA resource bank. Currently these have been placed on the poster cabinets within the 4th floor for colleagues to view as requested by the HOS.
  • The work from the international module has been published and I have had a abstract accepted for the International Society for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference in Raleigh, October 2013, “Emerging Technologies: Promoting global citizenship and leadership through developing an international module through the use of technology”.
  • Strengthened my own international collaborative work around teenagers and young people with cancer.
