Innovation

Competency map for patient safety which follows the other ALPS CETL maps for communication, teamwork and ethical practice http://www.alps-cetl.ac.uk/index.html.

What prompted innovation?

Key skills and learning outcomes vary across pre-registration H&SC courses but central to the practice of all of the professional groups represented by ALPS is a high level of professional competence in communication, teamwork and ethical practice. ALPS decided that mapping these common competencies would enable students to understand what is expected on graduation allowing them to gain confidence and competence in practice and work based settings. Once mapped these common competencies have been made available to students into user-friendly interactive formats in a language understood by all professions (see the patient safety map below).

The intention of these competency maps is to support assessment processes that can accurately and fairly measure capabilities and provide feedback as a basis for reflection.

What makes innovation different?

  • The maps are highly interactive and are not levelled so that students from different professions can access the maps at different stages of their course development.
  • The competencies for the different skills refer back to one another so that the students can see how their developing competence in one area is linked to another. The maps have also been produced in an iphone app which students can access in practice as in the picture below.

Changes in practice

The maps allow students to prospectively reflect prior to placement and to build competency in key areas. The students use the performance criteria to evaluate expectations and become more aware of key outcomes.

Impact

  • We are currently evaluating the patient safety map but I attach the ALPS casebook which outlines impact of the CETL from different perspectives. http://www.alps-cetl.ac.uk/casebook.html
  • We were shortlisted in 2010 for the THE awards ICT initiative of he year and won the IMS Global Gold Award Impact in Practice June 2011, Long Beach, Los Angeles.

Dissemination

We have disseminated the ALPS CETL maps widely at conferences nationally and internationally, most recently:

  • Solstice Conference Edgehill University June 2013
  • ALPS CETL Conference, Leeds Metropolitan University April 2013
  • Clinical Skills Conference, Sheffield Hallam University September 2012
  • Y&H AHP clinical skills network conference, Normanton October 2012
