Clinical Skills Proficiency demonstrated through an online portfolio tool

Institution:

When did you first introduce the innovation?

Less than 12 months ago

Please describe the innovation you have developed

Advances in technology used in the learning, teaching and assessment of undergraduate delivery empower a learner in their learning process. This is evidenced through reflective practice of clinical tasks performed during in-house practical learning. I wanted to further develop opportunities for learners to maximise their experiences by providing video capturing of competence across a range of clinical skill sets that would compliment traditional paper based feedback and assessment formats to enhance employability and clinical practice in this cohort.

What prompted you to develop this innovation?

The showcasing of these clinical skills in an online portfolio format is novel. In addition, this format allows a learner to disseminate their portfolio in a compact and engaging format via email to assessors and employers to provide a robust insight into their ability.

In your view, what is it about this innovation that makes it different/important?

The portfolio is housed within an existing Blackboard learn VLE. The videos are captured and uploaded using iPads. There is no significant input to offer this resource.

To what extent does your innovation make use of existing approaches, resources or technologies?

Students ‘prepared’ better for assessment.

Validation of videos showcasing their clinical skills
– Student perspective (feedback)
– Employer perspective (competence)
– Academic perspective (rigour)

‘Sharing’ using BBL online portfolio tool has great potential.

To what degree has this innovation led to changes in education or clinical practice?

Student evaluation and feedback.

Colleague support and interest across faculties within this institution.

What evidence do you have of the impact of the innovation?

I delivered a case study of this innovation during a faculty-wide teaching and learning conference.

Potential additional showcases include professional body involvement and postgraduate/short course integration.

To what degree has the innovation been disseminated in your organisation or elsewhere?

This work will become a research proposal whereby the student experience and feedback will be analysed.

The input of employers to receiving this format of clinical skill competence will also be addressed through focus group sessions and employer liaison committee involvement.

Please provide details of any plans you have to disseminate the innovation in the future.

I have engaged an online portfolio tool provided through Blackboard Learn VLE to host and showcase the clinical skills repertoire of undergraduate Healthcare Scientists.
