Following the Spring Budget announcements, the UK Network of Professors in Midwifery and Maternal and Newborn Health welcomes the investment in maternity care in England and the focus on safety. However, the promise of 160 midwife posts over three years needs to be seen in the context of the high number of vacant midwifery posts and the challenges of retaining existing staff. As a network we firmly believe that quality care must be based on strong research evidence, and therefore we look forward to seeing a robust evaluation of the outcomes of the funded Avoiding Brain Injuries in Childbirth programme.
